Aries Tanker Corporation v Total Transport Ltd (The Aries), [1977] 1 All ER 398 per Lord Wilberforce at p.403:

A rule is nonetheless capable of being a rule of law, though no reason can be given for it: as Lord Sumner said (Admiralty Comrs v SS Amerika [1917] AC 38 at 56, [1916-17] All ER Rep 177 at 187, 188.), an established rule does not become questionable merely because different conjectural justifications of it have been offered, or because none is forthcoming that is not fanciful.
